The Indus Academy has its roots in the Playschool, a nursery school started in August 1989 by Mrs Masooma Anvarali, Mrs Tayyaba Siddiqui and Mrs Kamila Mazari. All three started teaching careers separately in different nurseries and schools before they set up their own nursery school.
The Playschool started operating in August 1989 with only 4 students. Within a month the student body had increased to 20 and then to 45 in the following year. The Playschool rapidly acquired a good reputation of being a small, private pre-school with confident and happy children who were easily able to gain admission into the larger prestigious schools in Karachi for further education.
By 1997 the Playschool had moved to an independent school building in the Clifton area. Here the student strength was 75 with 8 teachers in addition to the three original partners. With the success of this nursery school operation as well as the dearth of good schools in Karachi offering quality education, a need was felt to further expand the school.
